Welland Veterinary Clinic Gives Tips for Caring for Newborn Puppies

November 25, 2013

Newborn puppies are adorable, but they require a high level of care if they are to survive and thrive to eventually become happy, healthy adult dogs. While mother dogs instinctually know how to care for their pups, human intervention is sometimes needed to ensure that the litter stays safe and healthy. If your dog recently had pups, or is about to any day now, here are a few helpful tips from a Welland Veterinary Clinc on how to properly care for newborn puppies.

Create a Safe Den  – A mother dog and her puppies need a safe, secure place where they can rest and where the pups can nurse. Provide blankets and pillows for warmth, and change them every few days to keep the den clean and safe for the newborn pups.

Mother Knows Best  – During the first few hours, days and weeks after the puppies are born, they should not be separated from their mother. Their mother’s milk provides them with all of the nutrients they need to develop and grow. If, for some reason, the mother is not present or is unable to care for her pups, your Welland Veterinary Clinc can provide guidance as to what supplements and milk products will be suitable enough to simulate that of their mother.

Monitor the Puppies Closely  – Newborn puppies do not have fully developed immune systems, and if they become ill time is of the essence. If you notice anything unusual about your pups, including signs of sickness like diarrhea, vomiting, excessive crying or that one or more puppies don’t seem to be nursing, contact your Welland Veterinary Clincas soon as possible.

Work Closely with Your Welland Veterinary Clinc  – Caring for newborn puppies is a big job, so you’ll need as much support as you can get. Your Welland Veterinary Clinc should be considered your trusted partner, and as such, should be the first person you call with any questions or concerns you may have. Together you will help the puppies in your care grow up to be happy, healthy adults.
