Main West Animal Hospital- Tips for Decorating your Christmas Tree

December 1, 2011

The air is getting chilly, we wake up every morning with frost on our windshield and on our breath outside. The Christmas music is playing and the Seaway Mall is jammed.  The holidays are just around the corner in Welland and for many of us that includes setting up a christmas tree.

This time honoured tradition is fun for the whole family and even your dog can help come out and pick the perfect tree to bring home.  When you get to decorating your tree make sure to consider your pets as well.  Cats love to hide and climb in the Christmas tree so it’s important to make sure you have a very sturdy base if you own a cat.  Cats also have a strange fascination with tinsel and every year we end up seeing a few cats that are vomiting because they’ve eaten it.  If you see your cat eating tinsel on the tree take it off because it can cause some very serious problems.

Ornaments and lights should be placed at a level that makes it difficult for your dog or cat to get at them from the ground.  The last thing you want to see is your dog running around with a glass decoration in thier mouth.  A little extra thought can avoid many of these common problems we see yearly with christmas trees and decorations.

So have fun this holiday, and decorate the house and the tree, Christmas is only a few short weeks away.

Love,
