Ticks in Niagara
Fall in the Niagara Region is an excellent time of year to enjoy being outside with your dog. The days are sunny and warm and the nights are comfortable for sleeping. If you are planning to take your dog out for a walk in the fields and woods around the Welland, Port Colborne, Fonthill area please make sure that they are safe and protected. Ticks can be especially common in the fall and can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease.
In the Welland, Port Colborne, Pelham and Wainfleet area we have two types of ticks that are commonly found. The American Dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the Deer Tick (Ixodes Scapularis). In the Niagara region the Deer ticks have the potential to transmit Lyme disease.

You should always check your dog (and yourself) for ticks after being out on a walk. Additionally you can get added protection by speaking with our staff at the Main West Animal Hospital. There are excellent products that can be applied to your dog to prevent tick bites. You can also speak with our veterinarians about having your dog vaccinated against Lyme disease. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include general lethargy, poor appetite, joint pain/swelling, and fever.
