At Main West Animal Hospital, we know that preventative care is the foundation for good pet health. Regular wellness check-ups can help prevent illness and assist in the early diagnose of medical ailments so they can be treated in a timely manner, thereby increasing the chances of a long, healthy and happy life for your pet.
The Main West Animal Hospital is passionate about caring for your pet in all stages of life, from birth through the golden years. From behaviour counseling to vaccinations to more comprehensive adult care such as screening for genetic conditions, diagnostic testing and the development of individualized treatment plans, we provide your pets with everything they need to stay healthy throughout their lives.
Annual wellness checks allow us to monitor your pet’s physical health, keep up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention, and ensure proper weight and dental health. More importantly, these regular visits let us get to know you and your pet and give us time to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
Vaccinations are a vital part of preventative pet healthcare and essential to your animal’s livelihood because they prevent a variety of fatal diseases. We recognize that every animal is different and as such, we design individual vaccine programs for each pet we treat.
Our routine vaccinations for dogs include parvovirus, rabies and distemper combinations that cover the prevention of Adeno-2 virus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptosporosis, Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough) and Lyme Disease.Cats are routinely vaccinated for rabies and distemper combination boosters to prevent feline rhinotracheitis, calici, panleukeopenia and Feline Leukemia virus. We will provide you with a detailed schedule that outlines when your pets vaccines are due to be administered.
Parasites, both external and internal, can pose a serious health threat to your pet. Many of them also affect humans as well, so prevention is critical to everyone’s health and safety. We provide comprehensive flea and tick prevention as well as intestinal parasite control and prevention to help protect your pet against roundworms, whipworms , hookworms and heartworm, which can be life threatening. We also provide proactive care by conducting annual tests for early detection and treatment of any potential parasitic infections.
While adopting a new puppy or kitten can be infinitely rewarding, it can also be a bit overwhelming at first. At Main West Animal Hospital we understand the challenges that come with owning younger pets. Because of this, in addition to comprehensive vaccination schedules, we offer a variety of care and support services including nutrition plans and behaviour counseling to help you and your new family member adjust to living with one another.
Senior Pet Care
Once your pet reaches the age of about seven years old, they is considered a “senior”. The care required for older pets is vastly different from that of younger animals. We offer a wide range of services for pets in their golden years, such as regular preventative care, blood tests and diagnostic services to properly diagnose, treat and manage your mature pet health and wellness.
Pets, just like people, sometimes have special dietary needs. Additionally, some pets become overweight and suffer from a variety of unpleasant side effects as a result. Our trained staff will work with you to design a customized diet that will keep your pet at an optimum weight and meet any unique dietary needs they may have. Whether it involves nutritional supplements or developing an individualized diet and exercise plan, we’ll work with you to get your pet’s nutrition and weight in check.
Regular dental checkups play an important role in the health of your pet. Poor dental care can lead to bad breath, tooth loss, dental disease and even damage to the liver and heart. As part of our ongoing wellness and preventative care, we offer comprehensive veterinary dental care including cleanings, fluoride treatments and extractions. We also offer advice and training on how to care for your animal’s teeth at home.
Owning a pet can be challenging at times. We at Main West Animal Hospital want you to know you are never alone. We are there to support you in any way you need, offering a variety of client education, counseling services and even assistance with things like completing pet insurance paperwork and Petcard forms. Our friendly staff is always available to offer advice or answer any questions that may arise. We also provide grief counseling to help those who have suffered the loss of a beloved pet.
Pet Identification Services
As a responsible pet owner, you want to do everything within your power to make sure your pets stay healthy and safe in your home. What happens if your pet runs away or goes missing?
Main West Animal Hospital provides microchipping services, which involves implanting a tiny identification device under your pet’s skin. Microchips are about as small as a grain of rice and contain an electronic code which is registered to a database. Most animal hospitals and shelters are equipped with scanners that can be used to identify lost animals and get them safely returned to their owners.
We also provide tattoo identification, a less invasive procedure through which a unique ID code is permanently and painlessly marked on your animal. Both procedures provide the peace of mind that if your pet is ever missing, he or she will be found and quickly returned.
