The Veterinarians at the Main West Animal Hospital would like to make our clients aware that there has been a significant recall of pet food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods over concerns of Salmonella contamination in their products. A number of individuals have become exposed to the allegedly contaminated food and become ill. The recall involves both dry cat and dog food. Our veterinary team has not seen any animals yet affected by this recall. We would encourage you to examine the list below to ensure your pet’s diet isn’t affected by the recall. Diamond Pet Foods manufacturers a number of very popular brands of pet food in Ontario that are on the recall list. Some of the brands affected include:
- Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
- Country Value
- Diamond Naturals
- Premium Edge
- Taste of the Wild
- Kirkland Signature Brands (available through Costco)

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal discomfort. They can present with symptoms of diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Pets can be healthy and infected with Salmonella which allows them to be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your dog or cat has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact our animal hospital so that we can consult with your veterinarian.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. If you believe that you may have been exposed to Salmonella you should monitor yourself for signs of : nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. If you experience any of these symptoms please contact your family physician or nearest human medical care provider.
